The rating of a thermostat, in this case 82˚, is the temperature at which it
begins to open. The operation is slow and steady typically taking many degrees before it's fully open. I don't have any data for the 1.8T but the standard 1.8 was factory fitted with an 88˚ thermostat which is ideal for the UK climate.
If you Google the original part number given by DMGRS (PEM 100990) you'll see that there's a lot of choice. For example,
This Land Rover parts supplier states clearly that an 88˚ PRT is available. I would go for that one if I were you (if the ports are the same diameter).
You've said Tom that your engine reaches a
maximum of 82˚. That's consistent with a thermostat that is either stuck open or is opening
much earlier than 82˚, hence my suspicion that your PRT is faulty.
