Thanks Simon I think you have hit the nail on the head. once the car stopped i tried to restart straight away but just would not start up. Turned the key off and back on to ignition and could hear the pump prime then it started. so tomorrow i will lift the pump out on the rns and see if it has come apart.

But to be honest its the end of the road for this Rover. I will be taking my private plate off and the new battery and tow bar to put on my other 75 alone with the crown wheels. Iv'e spent a fortune on this old girl but dont trust her anymore. Once she is stripped of what i want its off to the scrap yard.
