My 53 model CDT makes this noise too and, from inside the cabin, sounds like it comes from the rear left of the engine compartment, the rear right when you're under the bonnet. To me it sounds like possibly the fuel pump just before the fuel filter - especially when on the overrun just after the engine's been using fuel - as if the pump is struggling when pushing against a higher pressure?
My brother's 1975 P6 2000 SC made a very similar noise, which was resonance in the water pump pulley - fixed with a toothed v-belt instead of the plain belt!
