The tailgate won't unlock unless the car is stationary, if you press the release button before the car has come to a complete stop, it won't operate. If it happens again, switch the ignition on and then off and it should work.
There is a manual release for the tailgate, open holder for the emergency triangle under the window, in one corner is a plastic button attached to a piece of cord, pull the cord and it will open the tailgate, there is a similar button and cord behind the offside wheel arch trim to open the fuel flap.
