I have an iPhone and iPod on my computer. iTunes recognized each one independently. You can then choose what you want to sync on each one.
On my ipod everything is synced but due to the smaller storage on the iphone I have only synced my playlists etc.
It was a while ago that I set it up, so cant remember exactly how, but I remember it being very quick........
