The premise here is that sensor or circuit glitches will occur far less frequently than they do with humans in control. Also, autonomous systems do not need to take their eye off the road in order to illegally look at/make use of their mobile phone, flirt with the passenger etc.

The sceptics should experience using adaptive cruise controls in everyday driving to appreciate just how much they do for road safety over humans.

It's all to do with statistical probabilities!
