Have you checked to see if the fuel filter has a clip fitted - if not in later petrol models this causes non starts - its a classic reason and many cars have been scrapped for not knowing this fact - the clip is below on e bay for £7.00.

Its a must for later petrol engines - if a clip is fitted the next thing to look at on a 1.8 is a corroded spade connector to the starter motor from the battery.

Check both these before you do anything else.
