Hi Simon, the main reason for fitting a vvc manifold is that it's aluminium, rather than the plastic oem which tends to leak, causing that well known issue with the 1.8.
The vvc also is bigger in plenum volume allowing more air. After fitting, the ecu needs to adjust during initial running, and the 5 presses of the accelerator pedal helps with this. Better performance? Probably a placebo effect, but throttle response seems a lot crisper, other than that, no performance increase.
