My Dad recently upgraded the version of Avast on his laptop and it caused some problems, being very heavy handed in blocking software applications it thought were unsafe for some reason. His laptop is actually quite old (at least 10 years) and whilst it has been upgraded to Windows 10, is still running an old version of Micrsoft Office (2013 I think). Avast blocked all Microsoft Office applications from working and some old photo editing software too. We had to go into Avast and create some exceptions for those software applications:

Since then, my Dad has enlisted the help of a local IT specialist as I'm over 150 miles away and can't always help easily, plus I'm no IT expert either! He told me that the specialist wasn't at all surprised at what happened with Avast.
Could this be your problem?
