After watching the YouTube video (which is about all I know of this particular job), it's clear that your expectation, (that the peripheral notches on the gear wheels should align), is incorrect. The notches appear irrelevant to the job. If you watch the video, after the front belt is fitted, the rear gears are removed after fitting the tool 18G1747 which is used to maintain them in their current orientation. From here on, there's no mention of peripheral notch alignment, only that the central keyways must point towards each other before adding the belt. After spreading the gears to tighten the belt, tool 18G1747 is added and the assembly applied to the camshafts. If there's a mis-alignment here, the relevant camshaft is turned to fit the gear position. This step is the essential difference in it and seems counter-intuitive.
