If the plenum drains are partially blocked then water levels can get high when it rains and then subside over time.
The E on the dashboard may be the clue to what happened - ECM got wet and then lost communication with the automatic gearbox.
If it happens again best get it checked out - Brian does a very fast and very thorough turn around by post for the ECM if it is faulty.
