Surely, it is because people no longer pay for quality?

You will find that many far eastern 'manufacturers' are pressing car parts one day of the week, kitchen utensils the next day, toys the following day, etc. using originals as patterns to produce something of vaguely the same form. They probably use the same material for all three.
