No worse than anything else being cobbled together at the time of their production, and streets ahead of many mainstream rivals from Ford, Vauxhall, etc.

I would agree with that. Perception is often more powerful than the facts. Once a brand is damaged you can build the best car ever and struggle to sell it because buyers will not believe that it can be so good. Brand perception can be everything.
I’ve always believed that BL, ARG, MGR and all the the other names it had made great cars, badly. SD1 I drove to the scrapper was a dream to drive but full of holes. The list goes on unfortunately.
