Well you've just highlighted the problem - unless you are lucky/have owned the car for years and years etc etc any 15-20 year old car is going to cost you increasingly regular money to fix if you use it as your everyday car.
Doesn't mean you have to buy a brand new car, just a newer one
and yes, I know any car regardless of age can potentially be a money pit.
