Default New intercooler hose = better mpg?

I recently fitted one of Jules' excellent hoses - it hadn't split but as I've done 100K thought I'd better. I had expected the old hose to be claggy but didn't think the EGR inlet would be really gunged with oily deposits. Anyway replaced and did a 400 mile run and found I was definitely getting 2mpg better. So thinking about it now I tend to believe the improvement was not so much changing the hose as cleaning the inlet - something I'd never thought of before and doubt if anyone has before it left Rovers. Agree?

(Big Russ re-mapped it awhile ago).
