Well we've been away this weekend and can report as follows.
If pulling forward a couple of inches on arrival the hitch will extend itself, although we found not fully. There is only a couple of inches to the bumper wit the removable tow bar and despite pulling forward, the damper never fully extended until unhitched.
Definitely an improvement, but still requires another person to move the car when unhitching.
