Before you sell it and buy something newer. HDMI is just a means of carrying audio and video over the same channel and even that is only version1.3
As long as the projector can show a resolution of 1920 x 1080 then you can watch blu ray (even if it can display 1280 x 720 you can watch blu ray and High Def content). VGA can support far higher resolutions than HDMI so dont throw anything out until you fully know what you have to get.

720p (digital ready and will show a max of 720 lines at the same time)
1080p (full HD and will show a max 1080 lines at the same time)
1080i (basically the same as 720p in that it shows 1080 lines but not at the same time).

Co-axial connectors will output these resolutions too.
