Sorry to be a bit of a damp squib but isn't the need to drop the gap to 0.5 mm ( which is only 20 thou in Morris Minor money ) a sign of something poorly in the sparks dept ? Ancient coils used to be able to fire a 25 thou gap , and modern equipment is vastly more powerful with very high voltages , hence the manufacturers recommendation of 1mm or 40 thou
