Sorry for the Hijack but..........

Went to work wednesday last week and had awful clutch judder (as in it felt like the engine was being ripped out) in first and second gear and the rest i couldnt get a clean change, limped it home and left it a few days, moved it on saturday and the judder wasnt as bad. Was thinking about the slave leaking and contaminating the clutch plate, how do i check the level as the master cylinder is totally black and cannot see in?
