Yep, they were the 2 door (coupe) versions (at least in the early 80's) the newer imports were 4 door V6 things.

the 2 door had a very strange combination of upholstry, that resembled lace stiching into velour (at least the 2 i saw had anyway) they had pillerless doors and the back windows wound down to give that long sleek look. I liked them as well

Yes, a very nice looking car - the earlier ones with the twin lamps look best (the Mk 2 had singles) The interior was, shall we say, 'nicely' finished, and if I remember correctly, included a rather smart overhead console.
