Engine light on in dash.

Hi all. Let me start by saying thanks to all who have posted in this and the "how to's" forum. I bought my 75 last Friday in Doncaster, and drove it 189 miles home with no problems. Did the plenums and pollen filter using Arctics excellent instructions, and was all set to attempt the plugs on Sunday. Sat night I drove 15 miles to a gig, and when I arrived I noticed steam. Popped the bonnet and found coolant spewing from the filler cap. It was slightly loose, so after it cooled down I topped it up and replaced the cap tightly. Same result when I got home. Following morning I undid the cap and coolant spewed out again as if it was hot, and now the engine light is on. The guy I bought the car off said it had just had the HG done, but had mislaid all the paperwork except the logbook. I haven't the knowledge or expertise to attempt to figure this out. I suppose you could say I'm to mechanics what Jo Brand is to weightwatchers!! lol. So the question is, does anyone know a Rover specialist in the East Wilts area? Obviously I'm not driving at the moment, so they'd have to come to me. Thanks in advance, Phil.

Forgot to say this is my 6th Rover. I've had '85 and '87 213's, '93 and '97 820's, and a '95 825d.

Sorry to say,but it seems a bit suspect about the paperwork. Sounds very much like hgf.

That's what I was thinking too. I broke all my own rules of buying a car.... No history, viewed at night, and bought it there and then.. No fool like an old fool eh? Still need it sorted though.

Sent the car to garage. Mechanic said the thermostat was "lazy" and replaced it. Then he rang to say the car was fine at idle, fan kicking in normally and temp normal, but when he tried to drive it, the temp went up. Now he says the turbo's gone. Seals leaking into the cooling system. Anyone know where I can get a reasonably priced turbo? Is the mechanic pulling the wool?

"bump" :-)

If the turbo gone it will be coming out the backend lots of steam and blue stuff fron the exhaust. what was the price of the thermostat? ( if you dont mind me asking)

Phil63 16th May 2011 23:19

Don't know the price of the thermo yet. He's still got the car. Wasn't much of anything coming out the exhaust when he took it in. He said there was coolant in the turbo inlet?? I'd already booked a long w/end away with the missus, so haven't seen him since Thurs.

what yeat is your 1.8 t? if your engine light is on he should be able to get a code off it

Phil63 16th May 2011 23:30

2004. 83k miles. No history. He said he'd reset the light, and it hadn't come back on.
