CD Changer

A couple of question about the CD changers.

When does the glove box CD unit get powered, when ignition turned on or when "radio" turned on?

What is the difference between the boot mounted and glove box mounted CD changers?

The harness for the glove box CD changer, this seems to be part or a much larger harness going to the radio. Is the harness from the glove box to the radio inbuilt into all the radio harnesses?

Is the glove box CD changer, compatible with all the 75 cd/radios?

Was the harness for the boot mounted changer fitted as standard or only if ordered at time the car was purchased new from the dealer?

thanks

CD changer - answer

5 Attachment(s)
I can only speak for Harmony to Alpine CD changer - which was the option on my 2000 Classic SE. I am currently planning this installation to my car.

The harness VUL100310 is used to connect the CD changer to the Radio and car. This is a 3 way connector consisting:

1) A BMW 17 pin male - connects to car loom behind the ashtray to a similar female socket.
2) A BMW 17 pin female - connects to the Harmony radio, and a 10 pin female that connects to the Harmony radio, just below the 17 pin connector
3) A 10 pin female connector that connects to the cd changer in the glovebox

Since my car was supplied without a changer, this means the harness to connect my Harmony radio to the car is BMW 17 pin female at the top C0981 - and ( I presume since I haven't completed fitting my CD changer yet) a BMW 17 pin male connecting to the car wiring harness.

My used CD changer came with some of what I think is the remains of a VUL100310 it was connected to, and I contemplated using this by splicing onto the C0981 wires for k-bus, power and earth, and connecting the audio to the back of the Harmony connection C1316 - SD1t00 sent me the diagrams from RAVE.

Pictures

0) VUL100310
1) C0981/C1315 (17 pin socket for Harmony without/with CD changer)
2) Loom connector to CD Changer - I think cut from a VUL100310.
3) 2 twisted audio pairs - connect these to Harmony o/p pins 1/6, and 2/7 , K-bus, 12v +ve feed and earth Connect these to 17 pin wiring
4) CD Changer model number

Kevin, thanks for the reply. I will go and check the radio again
Do you have the CD changer and harness?

Yes I have sourced a CD changer and a harness... If you wanted you could snip off the CD changer and extend/reroute the wiring to the boot area if you wanted your glovebox back.

thanks, just seen your other thread where you have said you have sourced the parts.
Thank you also for telling me where the harness goes
I have managed to remove the CD changer, air con control, ashtray and radio. I'm struggling to undo the plug behind the Ashtray...... I cant work out how it comes apart.
I'm not sure if I will be able to pull the part of the harness out that goes to the CD changer, it seems trapped. I'll have to get a torch and get under the glove box area.

Even if the changer works, I may not fit it into either of my cars as I dont want to loose the glove box space and fitting it into the boot is not convenient for changing cd's.

thanks again

I think the connector to the car harness has a clip that needs prising out to release it... The connector to the radio (Harmony) does... It may be on the car side...

Two clips to release under the glove box release a panel which allows access to the nuts holding the CD changer in place, that should allow you to oulk it forward and release the connector at the back of it... Then feed the harness out of the glovebox and into the console area... 🙂

Try as I might I could not work how the harness to the radio came away from the cars harness. I ended up breaking the cars socket which is not wanted so I could get the plug out. I still have one, perhaps cable tie, to release then the harness should be free.

As for connecting the CD changer up to my car to test it..... not so sure I want the agro.

Hi Macafee2,

Fitted my CD player today - I did it the easy way - my car doesn't have bells and whistles so ample space in the console - and since it wasn't apparent where the harness from the Harmony ended up, I simply connected my VUL100310 between the existing harness at the back of the Harmony, then to the Harmony and the cd changer - tested it - and it recognised the CD player, played CDs, but with no sound!!

Another thread on here mentioned the small 10 pin white socket on the Harmony connector of the new harness, which carries sound signals from the CD changer, can be incorrectly installed during manufacturing - it is held in place with a blue clip and metal "jacket", I swapped this around 180 degrees which involved unjacketing/rejacketing it, and reclipping it into the harness - plugged everything back in and SUCCESS!!

Hope this is of some help.
