T4 in Hamburg required. BCU was removed

As the wipers were going off occasionally and then stopped altogether, I cleaned and greased all moving parts. I then cleaned all connections and replaced the relais. Nothing helped. I then had the car checked via a garage, that has a T4. They diagnosed a fault in the BCU, after checking the wiper motor. I was unwilling to remove the BCU, but did so and took it to a British specialist here in Hamburg, who ran all the tests they have available. No faults found. I have given out 150 GBP for tests and labour and the fault is still there and to top it all, the windows, rear boot lock, keys and central locking no longer work. The Symphony radio still works, because I left it on, before disconnecting the battery. I have tried disconnecting the battery and holding the terminals together, in order to do a BCU reset, something I've not heard of before, but that did not work either. I would like to stop giving out money for nothing, but I guess that will continue for a while :-)

Next job: check the earths and the wiper switch.... fuses are fine

Added: cream two-door BCU

Bcu

Also had a problem with my BCU which in my case meant no ACC and no rear windows. The ACC had all the local experts beaten (Bosch) but I had the good fortune to get some expert advice from London.

Substituted for a similar BCU (black) and regained lost functions but also had to swop the keyfob circuit board from the donor BCU car. nb. Not the transponder chip but rather the circuit board.

My car now has all the standard functions it had but I now also have speed locking which had obviously been enabled on the donor vehicle.

You can probably get your original circuit board programmed to the replacement BCU when you next return to UK if you want the original configuration (and the ZCS coding matched?) but the above solution will restore functionality to your remote locking etc.

It will probably cure your wiper problem too!

I believe the 75 owners club Germany have their own T4

seancar 3rd November 2013 21:28

if you are paying i can be there in 2 days with t4 and new bcu could do with a few days in Germany lol

ChrisNHH 3rd November 2013 22:51

Might try that...

No holidays to Hamburg for you ;)

By the way, the company in Hamburg who checked the BCU was BBA Reman. Are they able to get the unit working, or is this only possible with the T4?

I would appreciate some help identifying the relevant thread, in the forum. I can't find a post that includes much about the effects of refitting the BCU. Anything like clicking on the key button three times, to turning round and doing a rain dance would be helpful, if it works

If you send a pm to Woof25 he can put you in touch with a former member who did a successful remote T4 session for a member in Sweden free of charge.

Re: T4 in Hamburg required. BCU was removed

It's pouring down and 6 degrees C here this morning. I discovered that the clamp was loosening after being tightened on the battery, so I roughened up the pole and refitted it correctly. While the battery was disconnected, I removed the plugs from the BCU and put them back in again. The BCU is now working correctly. The wipers still don't work, so I might try and find a new switch. I assume all switches are the same for LHD and RHD cars. I'll check the wires and connections on the switch first.

Thanks for the tips so far! :-)

PS: My BCU is the cream two-door one

A most grateful member in Sweden who also runs a SD1 Vitesse:D

Good news Chris that your BCU has regained functionality except the wipers but in your shoes I think I would ask seancar for a replacement cream BCU with matching fob just to see if the BCU is faulty or not especially when a fault was found (and then not). Sean's rates are most reasonable, and why not even a wiper switch too.

Good luck

Waiting for replacement switch... I've taken the original switch apart and cleaned the contacts, without success.

T4 in Hamburg required. BCU was removed (wipers)

Wiper switch replaced, same problem...

So, it must be the wiring, or the BCU is playing up as the T4 test revealed.

It's amazing that such a small problem cannot be found. It's certainly annoying to have to spend money on work, that leads to nothing.

I have to work today. Back this evening...

:-)
