What wax
 

Two questions really, the first.
What is the difference/different use of hard wax and soft wax?
Secondly name me a good winter wax that I can purchase from a local store as opposed to on line? This needs to be a long lasting wax if poss.

Soft - easier to apply. Hard - lasts longer. That's about it AFAIK.

As for what to get, it really depends on what your local shop has in stock. The wax a lot of people in the know recommend for winter is Collinite as it's extremely durable but you probably won't find it in Halfords. In terms of what they and their ilk sell, you'll probably get most mileage out of using Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection (aka EGP) underneath any wax you use. Then top up with a spray of quick detailer after subsequent washes.

I have a what car product test from a couple of years ago...it rated the top two synthetic hard shell polishes as...

no1. Max Wax
no2. Auto Glym super resin

I have used both and they are brilliant but the max wax is £5 cheaper and a doddle to remove.

The Auto Glym stuff is aguably better, but I cant justify spending the extra cash for marginal difference...thats why it won the test.

I can't speak for Max Wax, but the Autoglym product (SRP) isn't a wax, it's a polish.

It'll give you a lovely shine, but it won't protect your paint from the wintry elements at all. I can certainly vouch for it because I use it myself, followed by EGP and a wax (lately Pete's 53, but I don't think you'll find that unless you order online).

off the shelf I would go with EGP too and top up after 3 months. and if you are feeling flush collinite is excellent, two coats will see you through until april.

the blue velvet is really nice. Leaves a very nice finish.
