Purpose of map sensor (diesel)?

Can anyone tell me the exact purpose of the map sensor?
I know it reads manifold air pressure, but for what purpose?
Does it “control” anything?

Yes. It sends a signal to the ecu along with the maf sensor, of the pressure in the manifold and it helps the maf /ecu to control the amount of fuel to be delivered to the engine under all conditions.

Hey, I believe it has to do with ignition timing, and therefore fuelling, not certain, please do not try to clean it by inserting anything into the tiny orifice as it will probably destroy it just disconnect the wire and withdraw the sensor then wipe away the oily deposits with a soft cloth.
