What does it mean to be English?

One of the English national daily newspapers asked readers "What does it mean to be English?" Some of the emails were hilarious but this one from a chap in Switzerland stood out;

“Being English is about driving in a German car to an Irish pub for a Belgian beer, and then travelling home, grabbing an Indian curry or a Turkish kebab on the way, to sit on Swedish furniture and watch American shows on a Japanese TV.

And the most English thing of all?

Suspicion of anything foreign."

from what I can see, to be English is to be tolerant, accepting and understanding.... until there is oil involved....

Sounds like you're describing 1.8 owners.

Hi.
What a brilliant question to ask and a spot on answer. It has its funny side but also very serious.
Just looking from my chair. My mug of tea has the mug made in China along with the, laptop, Christmas tree, decorations, cards, PVR, Youview box, Mobile phone, Sofa ETC. The TV's are a little different, all the ones in the house are a mix of Jap, Korean, and Chinese, same with just about everything else. Its only when you go into my shed that it changes, 90% of what's in there is British and I'm proud to say it all works beautifully.

Please show me these pubs in Britain selling Belgian beer (good belgian beer). I normally have to get on the ferry at Harwich and go and find one in the Hague. Won't have a german car (at least no more german than my 75 ;)). Prefer Italian leather to IKEA 'finish it yourself' furniture - But yes watch American TV shows on Japanese/Chinese made TV - Often using a British built media centre.

suspicious of everything.... especialy British Politicians!
