What a rip off eh?

Me back box will need replacing soon so I went to local exhaust fitter to get a quote.
£170 +vat to supply and fit. £70 +vat if I supply the back box and they fit it.
In your dreams I thought.
I've had a looksee about and come to the conclusion I could do it meself.
If I get a exhaust pipe cutting tool like them mole grips with a chain and cutting wheels, then if I jack the car high enough it should be achievable.
What do members think?
After it's done the pipe cutters could go back on Ebay.
Next problem is sussing out a back box for a diesel tourer that fits
Again any suggestions will be gratefully received
If any members have done this to there car please comment on how it went and any suggestions to make it easier.

I bought a back box for less than £60 and fitted it myself. Not difficult but requires patience.
Day before put some penetrating oil on the 2 nuts on the clamp to undo it easily.
Buy a new clamp. It’s so much easier especially if the old one is rusted so bad you have to cut it off.
Original ones were held on with a metal strap and hangers. Aftermarket ones tend to just have hangers welded on which attach to the rubber hangers.
A rubber mallet proved useful to tap the 2 sections together and some exhaust paste to get a good seal once it heats up.
I put my car up on ramps which have proved useful for many jobs over many years.

The biggest issue for a DIY'er would be if you have to bend the pipe to center the outlet in the rear valance trim. A local garage would probably bend it for you cheap enough.

That's one of my concerns.
I want to get a rear box that fits and don't need bending.
Recommended back boxes off Ebay will be gratefully received

I bought this one last year, good fit, just gave a few coats of HT spray in silver to help protect it a bit longer!

I purchased a custom stainless steel Powerflow back box from my local Mr Tyre.
Cost me £125, fitted and I got to choose the design, pipe tips and how loud I wanted it!
It comes with a lifetime warranty!

That price does seem a bit on the high side, but remember companies have significant overheads to cover. It doesn't go straight in pocket. I would say most garages charge around £55 + VAT per hour minimum.

Have you tried F1 Auto Centre on Washford or ETB at Lakeside I had a reasonable quotes last year for a saloon back box, I can't remember the figures, in the end I managed to source a Walker brand myself just before they discontinued and had it fitted by my local garage who charged £30.

Cheers Gary,
Thanks for the link.
When you fitted yours, how did you get on with cutting the exhaust pipe?
Did the new pipe fit good round the old pipe?

Same question for Victor if I may?
