Are these orings useless

Having just taken a Stat kit from my parts bin the shed I notice that the o rings on the straight and angled pipes have turned grey and are no longer black.

Now these pipes were sealed in a package but I believe are patterned parts that was part of a kit that I got, the stat is genuine as I can see the rover code but the pipes are not and in plain sealed polythene bags. I think I got the kit from DMGRS but I'd have to check that so I'm casting no aspersions.

I remember I saw a thread recently regarding o rings that were pink in colour, could this be the same issue?

I assume these should not be fitted when I get the stat changed next week.

In terms of auto correct, throw it in the bin, not the parts bin, but the refuse one ;)

Buy a genuine pipe, the one you have pictured there is a cheap and nasty one.

If you decide to go ahead and fit the pipe you have, the replacement o ring is a CDU3858, I personally wouldn't fit it though.

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to order this kit from ECP instead.

O-rings should be stored in a dark poly bag or away from direct UV exposure. Probably UV has gotten to them and hence they should not be used. In my industry o-rings are kept for a maximum of 5 years from manufacture batch date.

I worked for FIRESTONE tyre company for a short while between jobs. I had a chance to walk around the factory where they moulded the tyres.

The rubber actually starts off GREY. They then add a black dye with the consistency of flour.

The guys that got to handle this dye were given an extra half hour at the end of their working shift to try and remove this dye from the pores in their skin.---

The point is that the colour in those O rings could simply be the dye starting to fade but leaving the rings OK to use.--------------Maybe.

That's a good choice Stubs. Note the additional supports on the thermostat housing spigot.

I would say these were in a closed drawer so no UV degradation happened over the time I had them.
