Rover 25/ ZR Diesels any good?

Hiya all just wondering if anyone here has owned a Diesel version of the 25/ZR.

I've had a Rover 25 1.4 in the past, Just thinking about buying a cheap car too go too work in rather then taking Christine all the time Also I want too store her away ready for paint next year. :xmas-smiley-008:

Reliability and cost wise too run are they any good?

I ran one for 12 mths for that reason, cheap. Apart from that, it was clattery, very uncomfortable on a long run and the top of the tailgate rotted out. Sorry there's nothing positive, just my experience.

I ran a 25 petrol for a while. Lots of electrical gremlins caused by chafing of wiring to tailgate, central locking woes and an obligatory head gasket! Once they were sorted, it all went very well. Obviously not as comfy as the 75 but it was an economy car.

Ran a 1.8 Petrol ZR for more than 2 years and it was a great car to own. Now as you can see below I have a 2.0TD Streetwise as my workhorse and it’s proving very good indeed. It sits between a 25 and a ZR in terms of ride and handling but is more sporting than soft. The engine is a bit agricultural but it does the job achieving 53mpg. My last one was remapped and gave me 58mpg. My only gripe is finding rust free, low miles and unmodified ones. Age is making good ones harder to find which is inevitable. They are out there as I found out with both my ZR and Streetwise and there are no regrets. Don’t expect 75 quality though.

My last 25 diesel returned between 52 and 55mpg dependant upon my driving style.
Mid range torque is quite impressive for a tractor, the agricultural sounding engine is only really intrusive at idle, once on open road it was fine. It handles well, try one and see.

I bought it at 30k and have now passed it onto my MIL at 90k, and it just flew threw its MOT.

Spent about £1 on materials to fix the wiring harness at the hatch and had to buy a £2.45 relay for the BCU alarm module. in the time I had it. Fuel tank was recently replaced with a pattern version. Only applicable to oval remote fob later models with BCU

For a car that was probably designed way back in the nineties, It is very reliable and certainly not a pile of rubbish. However these cars are now at least 12 years old so bear that in mind, corrosion, etc and ham fisted ownership will all take their toll.

One thing though where I live we get lots of frosts and ice, I find the speed of heating up of the engine very slow and hence I tended to use a screen protector a lot in the depths of winter. I fitted heated seats too and exterior temperature ice alert. My son just used most recently it to go down to Swansea and then across country to another place to pick up some Imp body panels, and back some 800+ miles in total and he managed fine and has not been in hospital with spine damage etc. the car just walked it.

I had a 1.8 auto 25 and it went like stink, replaced it with a 45 TD conni saloon which has the same engine as the 25 TD would have.

In my 2 years of 25 ownership the only thing that went wrong was the drivers electric window stripped its teeth.

Still got my 45 TD conni saloon and the L series engine, apart from 1 split hose, has been mega reliable.

You will find that a 25 or 45 will seem like its on rails when it comes to cornering compaired to the 75. - but then the 75 is more of a long distance cruiser type of vehicle.

Good, reliable diesels Dave with good MPG, I run a 620D as my everyday car - bit more luxurious, but the same engine.. won't part with it.

So - would "I" get a 25/ZR diesel - yep.

hope that helps..

Kev ;)
