hgf maybe
hi guys,
my old mk1 v6 is pushing out more coolant than I can put in out of the cap. its been forced out by bubbles. have no mayo in the cap or water in the oil . seems ok till its warmed up. so far had new stat and pipes new header tank cap. car when running seems fine. no miss fire, revs as they should be.no water in the v. mpg has gone down by about 1 or 2 mpg . holding a lot of pressure in the coolant system. temp was always 93c since the new stat and sender unit runs at 88c till its starts to over heat. when it starts to go does not come down. fan works ok . kicks in at 100 but temp does not come down. been as high as 115c but manged to pull over and let it cool down. never got to the killer 120c. one place local has said its hgf . but most garages round me will not touch it or just want to change the engine. engine only has 74 thousand on the clock. any pointers . thanks steve |
Start by draining and refilling the cooling system following exactly the MG Rover procedure for the KV6. It's highly likely that you have an air lock. Ignore misguided guesswork involving head gaskets and replacement engines. ;)

It's the old story . It's a rover must be hgf .
I don't think it is. But the pressure is coming from some place. It's high enough to kick the cap in to releasing it. |

I had a similar issue when I bought my last 75 v6 it was puking all its coolant out and couldn't get it to fill up a full drain, refill and bleed by MGR procedure with the expansion tank raised up etc. Fixed it and didn't have any issues ever since. I did think it was a hgf as well because I had mayo but it turned out it was just the short journeys that cause it

update
well done the refill was fine when cold but soon as all was fitted back hit 93 and just forced all the water back out.
also found out that I have more oil in the air pipe from the air filter than in the sump. not a small amount but I could pour it out . not looking good. |

We've got four V6s in the family, two were dead easy to bleed - raise tank, fill, start and drive. But the other two were more difficult and I found it advisable to open the bleed screw while the engine was warming up to expel air. Needed several attempts before it worked. One of the cars defeated the professionals with their vacuum bleeding etc - https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s....php?p=2735474 post 16. Don't throw in the towel yet. Regards |
this was pouring out. not the damp or misting of oil.
did the lifting up of expansion tank and it didnt work. nice steady stream of water from the side pipe no air showing . but after all put back then run upto temp had the rise of water then just drops down again then we start again. both sides of the heater is fine . only one place will even look at it. can get another car for the price of sorting it out . |
Replace the coolant tank cap- get it from Xpart not any other source, I had dramatic loss of water and this was one thing we did as well as refilling asper the MGRover book. My episode was posted September 2019 here, cant tell you more Im computer idiot. Chris.S.

As Mileshawk says - replace the cap first.
I had exactly the same thing on a Mk2 Mondeo, coolant gushing out of the cap when up to temp, a new cap cured it instantly. |
