Wobbly knob.
I have replaced my manual gear nob with a wood/leather one, it's for the pre face lift model but is very lose and turns in my hand when I change gear.
Any suggestions? Thanks, John. |
Hi John,
If your car is a late 53 plate like mine then you may have the same problem I had. It appears that Rover started fitting the facelift gearknob to the last of the Mk 1's so what you had originally was probably a facelift gearknob like this: http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/q...b/P1010322.jpg Is the new gearknob you have bought the original walnut one like this: http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/q...b/P1010764.jpg Derek |
Hi derekosb, yes to both :D

Hi John,
Mine is a facelift with a walnut gear knob, from memory there is a d shape on my gear stick so i just cut a small piece of wood slid it inside the gear knob and pushed home , worked a treat. |

Thought it would be. I drilled down the hole in the top of the new knob to ensure it went down the shaft far enough to engage the plastic locking collar. The facelift gearchange mechanism appears to have a longer shaft. Once I did this, whilst it would no longer simply pull off with no resistance, it did still spin in my hand. The simple solution was then to wrap about 5 or 6 layers of tape around the shaft and push the new know down firmly without twisting. Mine has been on for several months now and never moved. Derek |

Is your walnut gearknob the facelift one though? The one that is all wood rather than a walnut (plastic) topped leather one like in my 2nd photo above (post 2)? Derek |
Hi Rob, thanks I will give that a try

John you where always going to get a lot of suggestions with a subject title like that. :o

I will try drilling the hole out and adding tape, thanks Derek, if that fails I can give the wood a go ;)
