To additive or not to additive, that is the question.
Now, this is something that could have legs, as views and opinions are going to differ greatly. As the title suggests, who of you out there use additives in your oil, fuel, water or whatever else you can chuck them in.
I've always been a keen user, and have had some good results but it's hard to actually prove or disprove the true effect. I've used them in the fuel, oil and gearboxes of many of my cars and never had any problems, so I plan to keep doing so. Right then, thoughts please............... |
No additives in my 250k diesel, and that's on cheapo diesel too.

I use Millers Power Ecomax in the diesel in almost every tankful. Also, Millers injector cleaner every 6 months instead of the Powermax.

I’ve used additives for years. Some work and some don’t seem to work.
Slick 50. Saved my TR7 when the engine lost its oil filter at 40mph. Engine did not seize up. Ran fine until i sold it 18 months later. With fresh oil and filter of course! Redex. I’ve got no positive proof of its abilities. Use it when it’s on offer. Engine oil stop a leak. This does work. My weeping crank oil seal weeps no more on my L series diesel Streetwise. K seal. Just avoid it at all costs. There are no doubt more I’ve tried but can’t report on anything positive as I can’t remember. I’m sure I will think about more and post again. |
Redex made a difference to my 1.8T, smoother idle and seemed more willing to rev.

I'm not fanatical about adding to every tankful but have a 500ml bottle of Archoil diesel additive which I am quietly working my way through.
Having slightly high readings on two injectors last year I followed the 'how to' on here and changed the diesel fuel filter and added some Tec4 ( its the stuff made by the old Forte people after they sold Fortes to Wynns)as I had an MOT coming up, passed the emissions test OK andI have added the archoil on a reasonably regular basis since just to keep things clean and lubricated I hope if these things do as advertised. The engine runs as smooth as silk ( not that it didn't before to be honest) I suppose that the placebo effect springs to mind but i suppose that the extra lubrication and raised cetane levels equate to putting in premium diesel but at a fraction of the extra cost at the pumps. Having had my injectors tested by Duncan at this years nano meet last month the injector readings were well down on the getting a touch high ones of last year. So presumably the Forte/Tec4 with or without the continued Archoil additive have certainly helped a developing situation be reversed. I also add Z1 lubricant to the oil once every 15,000miles or so as the speedway boys used to swear by it for its lubrication qualities when I was sliding round Newport, Kings Lynn and Carmarthen on my Jawa 897 quite some years ago. |
A bottle or Redex every now and then for my 2.0 litre petrol.;)

Although I did hear that half a litre of snake oil every oil change works wonders, my mates brother did 5 million miles in a morris minor useing it.:eek: Blackrose |
Ask Trikey about Forte.
Not a common used cleaner or miracle worker but a cut above the rest. I believe the good garage guide endorse it and if you own a diesel and the injectors are goosed a bottle in the diesel filter overnight after running for 30 seconds transforms an old Noisey smokey tub. You pays your money you take your pick. Millers is also good “snake oil” to the ill informed. |
