Car ramps

Can anyone recommend a pair of ramps that are low enough to get my Rover onto, don't take much storage space, and with a decent amount of lift?

I have been looking at the two piece plastic ones, but they only lift the car about 6 or so inches. I need more than this if I am to get my belly under the car.:D

Strips of 18mm OSB board make good ramps and you can make them any height you want. Been using OSB for years but try to avoid leaving them out in the rain.

FWIW, I have used planks of wood in front of taller ramps, which raise the front of the car enough to clear the ramp. Just remember to put them back in place before you reverse off the ramps.........

Thanks guys

I may make my own, at least they will fit the bill when completed.

Have a look at CJ Autos website as they do all sorts of different options depending on space and budget. Strongman tools is another one to look at but again all depends on space and budget.

Works for me too :}

You guys have made me think about it.

Making my own, i could actually utilise the slight slope in my driveway. If I make the base fit the slope of the drive, I could give myself a lot more space underneath the car. I would only need perhaps 6 inches of raise on the top. This would of course make driving a low car onto it much easier.

Cheers guys!

Thanks Xavier, some of the equipment on the CJ site is amazing.

I'll second CJ autos. I had a set of lifts from them at the Nec a few years ago (usually VAT free or some other discount) and find them amazing value for money and work well.

That's exactly what MarinaBrian does with his driveway in front of the house - probably why he bought it in the first place!:D

I've invested in Halfrauds axle stands and jack, with a backsliding trolley for getting underneath, but as yet unused, so cannot recommend.

Nope, if I'd been given a choice in the matter at the time, I would have bought a house with a proper size garage to work in ;)

But yes, my 35 year old ramps, made as a gas welding exercise while serving my apprenticeship still serve me well

I have made some ramps out of kitchen worksurface leftovers. They are getting a bit decrepit now as they are around 20 years old now, but the couple who live next door to us are having a new kitchen made, and I have spied some off cut pieces that I could make some more with. Easy enough to screw them together and gives my fat gut plenty of room to get underneath.

I have bought a set of these. They are really worth the bit extra.
Yes the do catch the bumper. I have spent this week respraying it...

Two bits of 2x4" under either one do lift it enough though. I have also got two long thin strips of rubber mats that stop them from sliding when pulling the car up.

Hi Mike.
Halfords ramps are quite good I have used them for over 5yrs and they are still good today, I have had FL1 FL2 Rover 75 tourers and saloons on them, I use them in conjunction with ramp

Hi Dave.
Hope you and Marina are doing good, and managing to stay safe.

They look the part & would need cleaning and tidy up paint ect, do you think they would be stable once in the air from side force ? they just look as though they would go side ways with the weight, I wonder if these were made for mini, A40 type cars.

Looked at the spec of these, and the maximum treadwidth is 7".........so I'd suggest they would be a little small for the job ;)

Hanstock Engineering Co of Maltby Rotherham were the manufacturers.

Snug is the word your looking for :D
But seriously I have used these before for the 75 (admittedly I never looked at the spec, :o:mad:) just drove onto them. Massive lift on them and no issues with stability.
Have to accept that for our cars they are at the limit though.

Tempted to get some for the Sunbeam

I have just finished adding another level to my old ramps made of kitchen worktop from next doors leftovers. They are around 9 inches high now. I could almost stand up under them( joke). I am waxoyling the brake pipes under the car tomorrow so will see how they go.At least they can not collapse.

I'm planning something similar. They are not as expensive as I thought they would be. My neighbour has one, had to redo the roof construction of his garage to get the height.
