What Temperature is to high?
Just bought an obd2 sensor to link up with Torque BHP App.
Quite simply want to know above what temperature is there a problem with the 1.8 k Series I am guessing its somewhere between 90-115? So i can set it to start moaning at me :) Thanks |
A normally aspriated 1.8K series should run 91-96 in normal useage. 96-105 is starting to get iffy, especially if tootling along (traffic jam with aircon off can see it rise to these temps) and 105 upwards is heading to danger point.

MGR's definition of 'normal' maxes out at 115C. That's when the temperature gauge moves off 'normal'/9 o'clock. The 1.8's radiator fan should kick in at around 104C. They typically run in the 95-105C range depending on driving conditions. The slower the hotter usually.

the temperature of the k series engines are normally quite high.
You can certainly see 105 degrees in normal usage. So to set the thing at 100 will give you many beeps. I think about 107 will be a good point, because if you get there, you want to make sure the fan is on and that it does not go higher. That will be a warning about 8 degrees earlier than the gauge will give you. But play along and increase it gradually until you only hear it occasionally. Then you know it works and you will quickly learn to anticipate the times it will chime. |

This is the first I've heard about this. The fan definately works, and usually kicks in after about 45 min - hour of motorway driving, or if I'm stuck in slow moving traffic it starts whirring after about 20 minutes. I've had my local mechanic look at it when he fitted a new radiator, but I stupidly gave it to him without any petrol in so he couldn't run it long enough to get the temperature up. Any body got any thoughts on this? |

yes i have a thought on this ,the mg in their name must stand for my guess :D the fan is designed to kick in only on higher temps it should kick in at 104/105 then it will stop when back down to 96/7 as lond as the fan isnt running when engine is turned off then all should be ok with the cooling system the fan is a 2 speed replace the resistor but if the fan isnt running on after turning engine off i would say the the fan is ok |

You should really start your own thread about this but briefly, it sounds as if your slow speed has failed which is very common. If you have the 'resistor' system it's very cheap to repair. If you have the earlier system it's best to talk to Jules and Arctic. I would advise against giving the work to the 'specialist' you mentioned, at least until you have received advise from us. You can search the forum for information on 2 speed fan systems. Simon |
