Employing a woman on maternity leave

My wife and her work college have been struggling for a year as the 3rd person on their team was off sick.

Alas at only 31 the young lady has passed away.

Her boss advertised a vacancy, held interviews and has chosen the replacement, a woman on maternity leave who is due to return to work in January. It is not as if the replacement is anything special.

To me this is totally wrong, the replacement is needed now. There is a risk that this appointment was a "job for the boys".

Well that comes as no surprise.

They do reckon most jobs are filled before they are even advertised. The interviews are just for show.

I had personal experience of that about 20 years ago.
I thought something was odd when the person before me came out of the interview laughing.
Turns out he was already on the managers team and looking for promotion, he got the job.

That was standard practice back in the BR days.

This happens with us almost every time. Generally the person is chosen before the job is even advertised. Not always a bad this as most of the time they actually deserve the job but it's difficult to progress if it's not your turn.

Nepotism is still rife everywhere and will continue while ever there are people in influential positions dictating what should and shouldn't happen. Best thing to do is just accept it because if you aren't that person there's nothing you can do.

After all it's got nothing to do with what you know, it's all about who...

in my case I would have preferred the job not to have been advertised and the person just be given the job, not to have driven 160 mile round trip and not to have been put through the stress of the interview and not have my time wasted.

I really don't see the problem. The person who is in the position of making the decision has chosen the best person in accordance with their criteria, whatever that was. The problem with being in the position of the decision maker is that everyone else thinks they know better. They generally do not.

This is the same as most sales and marketing people thinking that they know better about engineering timescales etc. than those responsible for the engineering. They never do.

Respect the decision maker's authority even if you do not agree with their decision.
