Euro Tour - Part 2
Phew. So Part One got us to Hungary.
We spent a few days there, based in Salgotarjan up in the North, just beside the Slovakian border. Went into Budapest a couple of times, where these next pics were taken. The best place to get a view of the city is up on top of the Buda hills. This first one was taken at the Citadella, which is topped by a fort and a huge statue overlooking the city. That's the River Danube, with the Elizabeth Bridge in the foreground. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF7475.jpg Along the hill a wee bit, you can see Buda Palace on the left, with the Chain Bridge across the river, and the Parliament building on the opposite bank... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF7508.jpg Next, we went along to Buda Palace itself, and along the limestone "Fishermen's Bastion" which overlooks the city: http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF7524.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF7579.jpg On the way back up to Salgotarjan, we stopped at the Hungaroring for a look ... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF7630.jpg The security guard on the gate got speaking to us, and said that, because we'd come all the way from Scotland, we could go for a drive around inside (as long as we didn't go on the track! :)). So we had a look at the Pit Lane area and the statue garden which commemmorates past F1 Champions ... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF7635.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF7637.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF7636.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF7642.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF7646.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF7647.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF7654.jpg Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher and Jenson Button in those shots, if you were wondering ... :) |
Also while in Hungary we went up to Eger, which is famed for its castle which was held by a small Hungarian force against the rampaging Turkish hordes way back when. They're immortlaised as the Stars of Eger in legend now.
It also has the second largest cathedral in Hungary, after that at Esztergom on the Bend of the Danube, which was the original Hungarian capital in the days of King St Stephen. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF7974.jpg Had some lovely Hungarian grub in Eger, too. About £30 to feed and water 4 adults plus Thomas: http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF8006.jpg The next day we visited Holloko, which is a World Heritage Village preserved in the old rural Hungarian style: http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF8038.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF8025.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF8031.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF8032.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF8033.jpg Still trying to fathom out the Hungarian language, mind. Good job Indy (The Boss) is a native Hungarian (though has lived in Scotland for 20 years now) ... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...1/DSCF8034.jpg |
