Clutch replacement ztt 190
 

Hi,

I've just been quoted £1063 to replace the clutch and flywheel on a ztt 190+.

Is this a reasonable price?

I expected to pay around 1/2 of this, am I that out of touch?

Firstly its a 5 hour job - so what is their hourly rate.

Secondly i would buy a Borg and Beck/lUK 3 piece kit from DMGRS - approx £215 - its good quality and ask them to fit.

Thirdly - why does the DMF need replacing - how have they reached that conclusion - it is generally held that the DMF on these cars is very robust unlike some - the DMF will be expensive. Andy Willi who specialises in MGR clutches told me in 1200 or so clutch jobs on MGR cars he had seen only 2 or 3 failed DMF's.:shrug:

Although relatively rare, DMF can and indeed do fail, and even if on the face of it the DMF passes what is deemed to be acceptable in terms of play, this is not a guarantee that it's fit for further service.

There are some cracking deals on genuine parts, and both DMF and a three part clutch kit comes in at less than £550, and that is retail including VAT, so there will be room to play in terms of discount.

What is generally accepted is the labour aspect, and more importantly the warranty aspect must be considered when a garage takes on this type of job.

Failure fate of DMF? well based upon the twenty clutches or so I've replaced on these cars, I've come across one failed DMF personally, and know of at least one that Andy Willi has replaced in an attempt to rectify a problem of his own design :getmecoat:

In terms of what would be deemed as reasonable to pay, no more than £850 in total if a DMF is used, and £600 if not.

I did my own 1.8t and brothers v6,and doesn’t really think there was much more involved on the v6 tbh.only trouble we had which believe it or not was the driveshaft nut would not budge,and took us over a day to shift it��

Not sure if it really needs aDMF.
Just purchased the car from a garage in Sevenoaks, I live along way away in South Devon.

There is an advert in the for sale section for a full clutch set up!

The garage I have bought it from has said it needs a new clutch, I am guessing they don't really know the car and may just be covering their backs by quoting for a flywheel, they say it is driveable but I don't fancy risking it on such a long journey.

I was hoping to get it sorted before I travel over to pick it up, I live a distance away.

The only other option would be to get it trailered from Sevenoaks in Kent to Paignton in South devon.

I think I'll raise a post to see if any of our members in Kent know of a trustworthy garage or a reasonably priced trailer company who could transport it for me.

Thanks for that Trikey, I saw the ad, the problem is getting someone in Kent to fit it for me.

The wife's car has a tow bar, Its a Honda crv.

Any idea how I can find out if the car could legally tow a ZT-T?
