House Cat. Yah or Nah???

After being around my friend, Sara's kitten. I want one too.
The trouble is, is it would have to be a house cat (because I have security doors going into my flat)
The trouble is I cant get it out of my head it cant be good for a kitten growing up to be stuck in the house (my last cat was able to go out doors).

I contacted the RSPCA but no luck, unless I want a older cat usually with or with out skin disease. There is a Pregnant Cats Kitten Rescue Centre not far from me. I suppose I could call then to ease my concerns with keeping a kitten/cat indoors. At least it would be loved and cared for.

I thought of getting two so they could keep each other company in the flat. Have all the details of the shots, neutering, food etc, from the Veterinary Centre near to me. The boss has some house cats of his own it seems.

Any thoughts positive or negative most welcome as I am trying to decide :shrug: :bowdown:

Phil-T4 18th June 2014 07:21

Its fine, my 2 are house cats having never been outside (apart from when Sheba fell off the balcony as a kitten) and previous ones were house cats too!

coolcat 18th June 2014 07:25

Hi Jay,

At your service Sir.
There are certain breeds of cats that are more adept at an indoor life although you don't often see these kittens available at rescue centres.
They are usually bred by breeders as they can command good money;)

I know kittens are cute but have you considered an adult cat, usually far less destructive and very often we have cats come in that have lived indoors only.
They come to us as their owners can no longer keep them for various reasons, usually moving to a home where pets aren't allowed or health reasons.
Just a thought Sir but if you do decide kittens then a pair would be a good idea for companionship:}

PaulPJ 18th June 2014 07:34

We have 6 cats and they are all house cats and they are perfectly happy being in-doors. We only let them in the garden when we are out there so we can ensure they stay safe and they all come in quite happily when we go in. HTH

Alan_G 18th June 2014 07:41

I have a cat, we were going to keep her indoors but the older she got the more she was at the window intrigued by the outside world. So we let her outside and she loves it. Hardly in, especially now its summer, loves to hunt and socialise with the local cats. Also loves to socialise via the window with our neighbours indoor cats. I think 2 is a good idea if your keeping them indoors. They are great pets though (on their terms!).

Just been roughly sketching out a few ideas to make some 'cat stairs' as I have a balcony on the first floor. They could then go out.

Cat fire escape. How Much!!!!!!!!:eek:

bubs 18th June 2014 09:34

I have 2 cats (well the wife does) and i think cats make rubbish pets. If i'd wanted a pet that ruins furniture and you only see it when it wants to eat then i'd adopt a teenager. ;)

With regard the fire escape idea, i saw on the "my cat from hell" tv show they had an outside balcony for the cat made from what look like plastic pvc pipe and netting. Looked similar to a cat version of the kids soft play centres. Might be worth looking into something like that.

I am thinking along these lines now

I can see three problems with us having a cat, two of them being small and hairy ("the children") and the other being the amount of open land here, mining museum and woods around us and seashore opposite, we'd never see the cat again if it got out.

Jay 18th June 2014 11:13

Think I have now sussed out a plan for some stairs so the cat(s) can go outside from my first floor balcony :duh: :smilie_re:

Phew ;)

would it be easier rather than the rotational method to have simple, side to side steps in a box section? not sure which would be better for the cat.
Or how about just putting a slide down and a long stratch post to get back up :)

klarzy 18th June 2014 14:30

or just throw it out of the window, they always land on their feet even from 4 storey's...

billericaymgxpower 19th June 2014 08:25

I have had cats as pets for years. Probably had around sixty within that time. Great pets but they are on the whole independent. I would always go for an older cat as generally they have quietened down and are more affectionate. Kittens are great fun but expect some damage. I had four kittens at one time and into everything from climbing up the xmas tree to see how many decorations can be knocked off and then racing around the lounge using the curtains as a climbing wall:eek:
I tend now to take a cat or two from the CPL and it's good to know they have a good home. Cats will want to be outside climbing and chasing. If they have claws they will climb. Some good ideas there Jay with the steps etc. I'm sure all will work so go with whatever suits.

Ros3 19th June 2014 18:02

I know some people keep cats indoors and say they are ok doing so, but having done indoor and outdoor cats I think they should be let outside. So that they can roam naturally and enjoy chasing birds and mice ect. It's the personal choice of the owner of course but I tend to think that if the cat was the one making the choice it would decide to go outside.

I have to agree with this really unless there are medical reasons that a cat cannot be allowed out.It's in a 'healthy' cats nature to roam and explore.

Jay 19th June 2014 21:51

Well I have spoken to the neighbours in my adjoining flats and they had no problem with me putting a cat flap in the downstairs security door if I decide to get a kitten. I wont need to do this for a few months from getting a kitten. It may be two as the pet rescue centre's sponsors like the kittens to go in pairs from the same litter so I may end up with double trouble;)
I don't know what they do if a cat has a litter of 3 or 5 kittens though??? Will have to investigate a bit further.

So I have the option and will probably side on letting he, she, them outdoors when old enough.

Thanks for all the replies, it has really been helpful.

Jason:)

Yep, Jeff, that's why I have thought of calling it TOCA. When I lived in Plymouth I had endless fun playing TOCA on the PS2 (I can hold my own when it comes to car racing games) As the cat will no doubt be endless fun it seems an appropriate name and sounds good for a male cat imho :}

I have an x-box Jeff and am not online with it. I bought it after getting fed up waiting for Grand Turismo to come out on the then new PS3 (I had completed all the other Grand Turismo games up to that).
So ended going down the Forza route. Come to think of it I haven't played the x-box for over a year now, even though I bought GTA 5 for it, still in the wrapper. Going to have to pull my finger out :D

If you want something else that the cats/kittens love get one of the collapsible tunnels they can run through.
They are the most played with toys that we have at the rescue, they love chasing through them:}

This is our Molly using the one at the rescue before she came home...

Two beautiful kittens there, they are going to be real bundles of fun. The dark one is very much like my cat Sasha. A black tabby but has a very pale underfur almost the colour of a lilac point Siamese.

Great to see two cats going to a good home.:}

Playing with Sara's Kitten Flo today. Flo has become really attached to me and me to her. Apparently she looks for me in every room when I am gone.
Took a couple of short clips today of us at tactical play and Chillin'. She is learning how to hunt and play and I am learning from her, brushing up my skills for when Toca and Tilly arrive;):D

Toca and Tilly are now in their new home. I collected them from Essex this morning and they were very good in the car on the ride back. There was plenty of space in their carrier.
They are mooching about and trying to find all the hiding places where no one can get to them. Removed them from one place with a plastic spatchelor:D
I can see why it is such a good idea to have them in pairs. They are sussing things out together. The odd cry here and there but they seem pretty chilled.

Collecting them from the rescue centre.

Yeah, everything went smooth Jeff. Carole is a lovely lady. They are both in stealth mode at the moment trying to wonder where they are. So not having to watch my legs at the mo. Keep trying to catch them so I can give them a stroke and make them feel relaxed. Currently sitting under my tub chair in the kitchen. They have worked out where the food is at and the toilet facilities:D. Toca does all the talking for the pair and he stops when I talk back;)

He looks well chilled Dave. My cats are calling for there mother now and again but I am sure given a bit more time they will be well at home;) I was wondering what name you called your cat:}

DaveyC 13th July 2014 19:15

This one is called Pepper. He's 8 years old now and the most chilled cat I have ever had........

He's a cream spotted British short hair. He gets loads of fuss. He especially likes kids and makes himself available for any attention from them. I all the e other time we have had him, he has not once bitten or scratched anyone. He does however flex his physical presence with the other 2 cats ;)

You a Carter too then?:}

Pepper is a lovely looking boy:}
Looks like a very contented moggy.

Yep, your are spot on there. He has got the life of Reiley. Completely pampered and makes a fuss of everyone he meets. He is a bit slow though bless him. :}

Jay 13th July 2014 19:50

Yep Dave. My dad had one brother who had no children and 6 sisters. Me and my brother both have boys to carry on our lineage of the Carter name;)
The cats seem to come to life with the smell of food cooking. Jeff, what have you been teaching them;):D

Here's a handy hint......they love cooked chicken breast:drool4::D
We buy it when we go as the cats do love it.
Make sure they only have small bits though;)

DaveyC 13th July 2014 19:59

Will do. Sara's kitten Flo likes to share the outer part of my scotch eggs with me. Will see if they like the same;)

Make sure the tinned Tuna is in brine or spring water, the sunflower oil one would be a bit much for kittens:}

Were they well behaved through the night Jay, or did they keep you awake ?:}

They were fine thanks Jeff.
Toca has started purring now and then when I stroke him. He is the most forward cat as you say. Tilly is almost getting there. She seems quite content though and doesn't need as much reassurance as Toca;)

Ps. It is obviously no milk for them. Just water. They don't seem to touch the water much but I guess they are getting hydrated from their wet food. Carole said Felix 'As Good As It looks' so that's what they have got:}

That's great to hear, they will soon get used to your routines and fit in with them;)
Very adaptable things are kittens:D

These seem to as well. I got a box of 44 pouches mixed for £11 in Asda so 25p a pouch. Not bad at all:}
