Clutch sound

Hopefully someone can give me some sound advice please 🤞

My clutch went in May 2018 @ 78k miles, had it replaced at Mr Clutch in Acton (West London)

Came out at £485 for clutch kit and slave cylinder, I was sold this with their 2yr 20,000 mile warranty (or so I was told)


As of a few days ago a strange whirling sound has appeared but only when changing gear or depressing the clutch pedal, took this back to Mr Clutch this morning hoping it would be a simple (under warranty repair) however after them listening they are saying that the fault is not covered by the 20k mike warranty as the slave cylinder was separate to the clutch kit they supplied at the time of repair.

They are saying it does sound like the thrust bearing but this is a complete part attached to the slave cylinder... I have no clue TBH


Having looked a ECP, eBay, rimmers and DMGRS all of these sell “clutch kits” as a 3pc and include the slave within its packages.


I have read through the post-repair warranty info which is attached and also only published on their website (I asked to see it in the garage but I was told that they do not have a copy of it for me to view)
I covertly set my iPhone to voice record in the garage as I had a feeling that a warranty repair would not be the way it would go, so the conversation can be referred back to should I need to.

Stipulates “complete clutch kits” are covered by the warranty and then further down “all other parts supplied” carry only the manufacturers warranty.


Where do you think I stand here? They wanted to strip it down but the minimum charge to do that, investigate and put back together was at least £300. That is not including the defective part...

Is this a case that anyone else would complain via their head office or trading standards? Or would I be fighting a losing battle here?

Firstly it is definitely the thrust bearing, I had a similar experience with my 75 diesel. I had the whole lot replaced,clutch assembly master cylinder, slave cylinder and dmf. Cost me £870, after being told the car would be ready on a certain day, the mechanic that did the job rang me and told me there was a problem but wouldn’t say what. He rang back later with a bull ... story about end float on the crankshaft. After posting on here, I was informed that the bloke was talking out of his backside. Anyway about 6 months later, It had the same problem as you, I decided not to claim on the warranty as I didn’t want that mechanic near my car again. Instead I got a trusted garage used by a fellow member to do the job and the bearing fell to bits when he removed it from the car. It was a LUK part too. I would take a copy of your warranty and invoice to your local CAB and ask them where you stand. A lot of these so called warranties have get out of jail free cards written in small print.

Ray did they not supply the slave cylinder then? As mentioned, sounds like it has definitely gone. What make was it?

If they supplied it then I'd argue it is down to them - whether they bought it as a complete kit or a separate part is not your concern.

Now it has bought the farm it is well worth complaining to their HQ, and threatening them with Watchdog and any other complaints platform you can think of.

Absolutely. The small print may contain all sorts of terms which contravene consumer law – if so, you have legal rights. CAB can advise.


The wording of the Sale of Goods Act etc has I think been amended since I last looked at it, but roughly speaking it says that goods and services must be of reasonable quality, last a reasonable amount of time etc etc – and, as above, it overrules illegal disclaimers.

And what Mike says about threatening wide publicity is often effective – has been for me in the past.
