KV6 fuel consumption

I recently had reason to rush home so over 80 miles of the M42 / A42 / M1 I averaged 72 mph with a petrol consumption of 42 mpg, according to the on board system. A few days later driving at my normal 65 mph I noticed the mpg figure actually go down from 40.2 to 39.7 mpg

This seems to defy logic, or is the engine known to be more economical at 3500 rpm than 2800 rpm?

My normal driving engine rev range is 1500 - 3000. Is this the best rev range for economicl driving, or should I keep the revs higher? I'm used to slower revving older Rover engines so would appreciate members' views.

You could be reading too much into it, unless the route and conditions are the same you can't really compare.

Example, if on your route you were rushing but had a tail wind, that could make a considerable difference. Aerodynamics have a massive impact on economy, it's like trying to swim against a current with a head wind.

The fuel consumption figure isn't "live", its an average so the "high speed" run wouldn't have that great an effect at the time but its influence showed up on the second, lower, figure.

If P2Roverman zeroed the consumption display then covered 80 miles at a constant cruising speed, he may well have achieved 40 mpg.
If he zeroes it again but this time before a cold start, then drives the same journey, he will get a lower figure.
If he doesn't zero it at all, he will get the closest possible to a true average.

The figure you get depends upon how you use the equipment. It shouldn't be considered an accurate instrument because it isn't. So I agree with championdaddy and Chris75, who cares? Just enjoy your V6 before government taxes you off the roads.

This too, the amount of people I hear saying "my car does xx miles to the gallon" my first response is "no it doesn't"

I have owned loads of Kv6 ZTs and never in a million years would I get 40 mpg. Best I got was 34 mpg at 55 mph for over 120 miles!
