CDTI Smoking and rough running @ 1.5 Revs,

Following on from my cutting out thread, (cutting out issue has gone since changed crank/ Cam sensor)

So currently my car smokes when starting from cold / or has been sitting for 15 mins from hot. if you rev to 1.5k, white smoke will poor out the back of the car,

When warm and will still smoke on and off depending on what speed and where on the rev range,

When at tick over she is smooth and quiet. (but smelly)

My full tank range of 550-600 has gone down to 400 if I'm lucky,

My new injectors have been taken out again and checked and all passed.
ECU checked, both engine looms changed, Every sensor on engine has been changed,

Replacement ECU fitted with stock 131 map, and New Bosch Maf fitted,

T4 session is not possible as will not talk to my car.

Any one any ideas?

Usual cause of white smoke is unburnt diesel or coolant being burnt, unburnt diesel can be bad injectors bad glow plugs low compression to name a few, coolant being burnt could be head gasket cracked head cracked block, you should get it looked at or start investigating it yourself, hope it's a simple fix :icon_eek::

I had it looked at and paid £1400 for 4 new injectors I did not need.

But if u search td4 2k misfire it's my problem. The freelander suffers from it and seems there is no fix 😒

Check that the EGR valve isn't bypassing. Shame that T4 won't communicate with your car as you can do a quick compression test if it could. What happens when you plug it in?

No fix? Of course there is - there must be. It didn’t come out of the factory like that, so something has changed. You just need to find out what and change it back.

I don't mean to sound flippant - I'm just reassuring you that the symptoms you describe indicate a real fault which therefore must have a cure.

Maybe they mean the repair is too expensive?

FWIW I'd be looking at a mechanical fault such as a blown head gasket. Rare on that engine, though. As Popcorn says, a compression test sounds like the next step.

I removed the egr about 15 years ago. Seems on the land rover forum a way to lower the smoke is to refit the egr bypass. But my car has fine 350k and been perfect till now.

Going to go to different garage but all fully booked till jan.

Have you checked the crankshaft breather? sits behind injectors in front of air filter? Gets missed at service, used a fit and forget years ago but had to replace the rubber gasket last year. That sponge can get caked and really hard if not replaced.

Sorry you said white smoke not black. I get white on mine on really cold mornings but it clears when engine warmed up. I'm guessing excess moisture inn the system and exhaust for me.

If it is blanked off then it won't be a problem - how about my other question; exactly what happened when the T4 was plugged in? Without an accurate diagnostic the only other option is poke and hope, which as you have found out can get expensive. Might be better to concentrate on fixing the T4 communication and then you can get a good look in real time at what is causing the engine problem.

I used to have an old and old school vw lt van with a manual injection retard function - pull the lever to retard to help cold starting, bit like a choke. Guess the idea was to inject later at max compression and heat, this would produce impressive clouds of white smoke if you used it when hot and not all the fuel was being burnt. Wonder if your injection timing has somehow slipped?
Incidentally my cdt rover sometimes white smokes, happens on warm days when restarted after an hour two. Never got to the bottom of it….
