VIN Numbers Deciphered (Updated)
I know that there is a data sheet on the main club site with details of the breakdown,
:smilie_re: http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/inde...epage=techdata but I think there are a few omissions on it, so I've been doing some research and would like to share the info for any interested parties: VIN deciphered (updated) 1-3 4-5 6 7 8 9 10 11 Serial No. SAR RJ H L P B 4 D 100001 Digits 1-3: World make identifier S = Europe A = U.K. R = MG Rover Digits 4-5 = Marque & Model RJ = Rover 75 & MG ZT RX = Rover 75 V8 & MG ZT 260 V8 Digit 6 = Trim level of vehicle (Class) For Rover 75: H = Classic & Classic SE (TL2) S = Club & Club SE (“Comfort” TL4) Z = Connoisseur & Connoisseur SE (TL7) C = Contemporary & Contemporary SE (TL8) For MG ZT: X = Base Spec (Non + models) (TL5.1) L = Plus Spec (+ models) (TL7.1) G = Top Range Spec (Sports Leather) (TL8.9) Digit 7 = Body Shell Type L = Saloon T = Tourer Digit 8 = Engine Type E = MG ZT 160PS 2500 Petrol F = MG ZT 190PS 2500 Petrol G = V8 4.6 litre 2 valves per cyl Petrol H = CDT 2000 Diesel K= 2000 Petrol L = 2500 Petrol N = MG ZT 180PS 2500 Petrol P = 1.8 1800 Petrol R = 1.8T 1800 Petrol Turbo T = MG ZT 160PS 1.8T 1800 Petrol Digit 9 = Gear Box & Steering Side B = 1800 Petrol (Non Turbo) Manual RHD (Just Manual/RHD on V8 cars) C = 2000 Diesel Manual RHD D = 2000 Petrol Manual RHD E = Rover 75 2500 Petrol Manual RHD F = MG ZT 190 2500 Petrol Manual RHD G = 1800 Petrol (Turbo) Manual RHD J = 1800 Petrol Auto RHD (Just Auto/RHD on V8 Cars) K = 2000 Diesel Auto RHD L = 2000 Petrol Auto RHD M = 2500 Petrol Auto RHD N = 1800 Petrol (Non Turbo) Manual LHD (Just Manual/LHD on V8 cars)[TBC] P = 2000 Diesel Manual LHD R = 2000 Petrol Manual LHD S = Rover 75 2500 Petrol Manual LHD T = MG ZT 190 2500 Petrol Manual LHD U = 1800 Petrol (Turbo) Manual LHD [TBC] W = 1800 Petrol Auto LHD (Just Auto/LHD on V8 Cars)[TBC] X = 2000 Diesel Auto LHD Y = 2000 Petrol Auto LHD Z = 2500 Petrol Auto LHD Digit 10 = Model Year Change X = 1999 Model Year Y = 2000 Model Year 1 = 2001 Model Year 2 = 2002 Model Year 3 = 2003 Model Year 4 = 2004 Model Year 5 = 2005 Model Year Digit 11 = Assembly Plant Vehicle Produced In D = Longbridge M = Cowley Digits 12-17 = Six Figure Serial number Unique To Vehicle |
Excellent Paul. I have some further detail:
Digits 1-3: World make identifier S = Europe A = U.K. R = MG Rover Digit 8: Engine type A suggestion: would K and L be better described as 2.0 V6 petrol and 2.5 V6 petrol? After all 2.0 and 2000 is the same thing. :) This would also apply to the entries for digit 9. Simon. |
Summat's amiss here. I've checked my VIN against the listings and find a discrepancy in digit 9. Mine's 'E' which translates into a Rover 75 2.5 manual gearbox, except mine's a 1.8Turbo manual. According to the listing, mine should be 'G'.
Have I got the wrong VIN? Have I got the wrong car? Have I got anything to worry about? TC |
Interestingly, my Registration Document states my MG is a ZT+ yet the trim code on the VIN suggests it's just a basic trim model. Puzzling...
|
Curiouser and curiouser said Alice.
My car's registered as a Connoisseur, yet the trim code (Digit 6) says it's a Club! And annoyingly, the identity sticker/tag stuck on the central pillar has been 'vandalised' to hide one of the figures. Is it a pig in a poke? TC |

I have modified the post somewhat. |
Just checked mine out and is the same as T-Cuts .Conny down as a club and is also a 1.8T but the vin digit 9 shows as a 2.5. Maybe Rover just got a bit sloppy with recording stuff towards the end?
|
Mine`s same as Grendel, log book says ZT+ CDTI but your checker says it`s a base model?
|
On my vin plate it states base+ rather than base (ive got 4xelectric windows and dual air con)
