Kv6 camshaft sensor change
 

Hello again ,

The garage who fitted my KV6 new camshaft sensor, used a non Rover part.
Car seems to run fine once started.
The car engine turns over now, several turns before starting.and cranking sound slow and laboured.
It has a new battery fitted All battery connections have been checked, all seem ok,Starter motor ok too.
Petrol filter was sorted and clip fitted couple years back.
I have the proper KV6 sensor now,From Rimmers. with link lead.

I was Wondering if it was that non rover sensor not reading camshaft position right causing the problems.
With the old Sensor it started very quickly, Never hardly heard Starter Motor.Until it got hot,Then it would not start till it cooled down again

Hello John,

Try charging your new battery externally for 24 hours. It may not have been fully charged when you received it.

How do you know that the starter motor is ok?

Thanks For your reply, I have fully charged the New battery three times now, and it made no difference,I have also recharged the one Year old battery, that I replaced.
That made no difference.
I will fit the correct camshaft sensor in case its that,
The starter was new couple years ago,and was fine till the original fault with camshaft sensor happened,I guess I will have to change the starter next to check that. Out.
I do have a spare.

I can't see how a camshaft sensor could affect cranking speed although it can prevent the engine firing.
It would be interesting to see the voltage across the battery before and during cranking.

Hello Again

I am not sure how it all works, lol
But as soon as it is a bit warmer,I'll change the sensor to the correct one for the car, I am not sure whether, the sensor just shows that the cam is turning,
Or whether it tells the system,when to fire the spark,
When the sensor is the right one for the car, I'll see what happens then.

Guess starter motor change be next thing to try,
All the voltages seem ok, Not sure when its cranking though,

One of the things which seems to point to sensor is,
When the car was first a problem starting ,When hot.
You would hardly hear the starter motor run, as it always started,within couple turns.,
So hearing the motor cranking over several times, is a new sound to me.
It has always started though,despite turning many times
I guess time will tell lol.

Effectively, this is the answer to your question because it tells the ECM the position of the camshafts.
I need voltage readings John, "seem ok" doesn't really help.
