Clean engine bay

Hi all,

Anyone have any tips on cleaning the engine bay??

My approach is to just take one area at a time and focus on that. I use a combination of wire wool, soft cloths, and metal polish, together with a variety of tools, (screw drivers, long nose pliers etc) to get into all the nooks and crannies.

With a bit of time and patience, you'd be surprised what can be achieved:

Just ask Teflon or Nev the Bear for advice.

As Cliff (Teflon) advises focus on one area at a time and once completely finished the engine bay is a lot easier to keep clean.

Some tips for very quick results would be thr following:

Buy some stainless steel slam panel fixings to replace the originals.
Polish the air con pipes and engine mount with a Dremel Multi Tool and Autosol Metail Polish.
All the visible paintwork inside the engine bay I use a waterless wash apllied with a microfibre cloth followed by a coat of good quality car wax.
Plastic scuttle panel, battety box, etc I use a good quality plastic cleaner or even Wonder Wheels tyre gel also applied with a microfibre cloth.

Some things that might take a bit longer:

Engine Cover can be spray painted I used a glitter effect spray on my ZTT Engine Cover.
Battery Box lid can also be spray painted.
Fuse Box lid sides can also be spray painted and a stainless steel cover added.

Here are a some photos of the engine bay on my ZTT.

As others have said, concentrate on one area at a time, and get it to the standard you want, then move onto the next area, and once finished, and after a lot of elbow grease you just need to maintain it, but I would strongly suggest staying clear of alternator with wire wool, use a dremmel and a polishing wheel

there are some members who have outstanding engine bays, in addition to those shown and are better than when they came out of the factory

One or two examples

very wise advice - probably the best advice so far on this thread. I used wire wool on mine when I first started, and produced a good few sparkes when I got too close to the connector. In the end, I taped up the connector to protect it whilst cleaning, but there are definitely safer ways of doing it as Stu suggests. I was lucky not to cause any damage. :o

Autosmart Finish is a good engine bay plastic dressing.
