Clutch on its way out?
 

I seem to be having to depress the clutch pedal all the way down to make a smooth gear change. The car, a 75 tourer cdti has done 140,000 miles and I wonder if I may be needing a new clutch. What should I expect to pay as I don't have the facilities to do it myself.

First thing to check is the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. It might be low.

I had a look and the fluid level is just below max

Try bleeding the clutch as if that helps, it's a cheaper option. It can be done, and with a vizibleed kit, on your own. (just have some plasters ready for the dodgy areas around the top of the clutch pedal and master cylinder)

I'm not sure how you can visually check for a MAX mark on the master reservoir as it's so tucked away, but I always make sure I have removed the condom and checked with my finger (that makes it all sound really rude, it's not meant to be.).

You are looking at the reservoir INSIDE the car, aren't you ??
