Fan seems to be working overtime - 1.8

Hey guys, back after a while with another question.
Every now and again, it seems my fan is working overtime, even though the temperature outside isn't spectacular and my air conditioning is on 'econ'.
Just now, I got home after a 30 minute drive (no motorway), 8°C outside, temp in the car set at 19°C on econ mode. Still, the fan is working hard it seems.

I already mentioned this to the garage before and they said they couldn't immediately see anything wrong: there's enough gas, no leaks, the problem apparently didn't present itself when the car was in the shop so they don't know what might be the reason.

Could it be my low speed fan doesn't work which makes the high speed one work overtime from time to time?
If so, does this have any severe consequences or is it fine to keep driving while the fan kicks into high gear every so often?

What temperature is the car showing and is the reading consistent? If the temp sensor loses the signal it drops into emergency mode and runs the fan at full speed.

Yes, that's a possibility Erik and there's a quick way to find out.

After starting the engine from cold, press the windscreen demist button then get out of the car and listen at the radiator grille. Can you hear the fan running continuously, not at all, or pulsing on and off every few seconds?

It's not advisable, particularly with a 1.8, since the engine will be running very hot.

If you have the 2 speed fan and the low speed has failed (do the demist test as advised) it will more than likely be the fan resistor has failed - at 2 oclock on your fan is there a silver or gold resistor - if so replace with the upgraded gold resistor which are cheap and frequently on E-bay.;)

The temperature goes up to the middle when starting from cold and stays there consistently.

I don't see or hear anything moving, so I guess the problem's located...

It has the silver one.

I know there is a How To on the forum for this, but is it easy enough to do or should I just ask the shop to do this? Since Brexit, parts from the UK are taxed heavily by customs, but obviously if I ask the shop it will still cost considerably more. I just want to make sure it's feasible for relatively inexperienced people as well before trying do it myself and ending up with a car I can't use due to parts taken off - even though the how to looks quite foolproof.
If it's feasible enough, what's the best search term for such a resistor, as there seem to be loads of gold resistors on ebay but I'm unsure they are the correct ones.

From what I've read here Ebay ones seem to be of varying quality. You'd be better buying from a known source, DMGRS supplies them but you'd be better contacting him re shipping costs etc: https://www.dmgrs.co.uk/collections/...airs-pgj000110

Gold Resistor

Even with the ones above they will not come with the tails already fitted and good heat shrink on the connections.

They are also not pre drilled to fit the existing plate.

So preparation will need to be done before fitting it to the car.

The temperature gauge isn't linear and shows normal as anything from 75°C to about 115°C. You can use the car's in-built diagnostic mode to get an actual number:

What kind of cable should I use for the tails?

Cheers, found it. Car gave the engine overheat message today as well. Engine temperature is now rather steady around 110° but I suppose that's still rather on the hot side.

Mine runs at 89/90 there's a Hans gauge for sale somewhere in the sales section, invaluable for 1.8 owners 👍
