Voltage of battery when charging?
 

Hi, does anyone know what the voltage reading across the terminals of the battery should be while the engine is running at idle, and when held around 2000rpm?

My bike used to be 13.5 at idle and 14.3 and above when held at 2000rpm. But the car was reading 14.3 at idle and only went up to 14.6 at 2000rpm.

i think at idle 14.8 and resting 12.7 or 8.:shrug:

Bikes used to produce somewhat low voltage at idle hence the change in headlamp brightness when you revved them up.

These days, cars and bikes are calibrated to charge the battery even at idle given the amount of electronics that act as loads even at idle.

As long as the voltage is between 13.7 and 14.7 with the engine running, there should be nothing to worry about.

Ok thanks, I was expecting a bit of a jump at higher revs like on the buell, so was wondering if the dead battery was due to a failing alternator, but hoped not at that was new last year.

Try putting plenty of load on the alternator, then measure the voltage - headlights on, heater fan full speed, fog lights etc..
