Battle of Britain veteran Geoffrey Wellum is now the last survivor after the sad loss of Tom Neil on Wednesday .
Geoffrey drives or used to , a Rover 75 .

I was watching a documentary recently about WW2 on one of the Sky channels and after it had finished it said all bar one of the people who had been interviewed had died.

Thinking about it anybody who participated in it must be at least 89 and probably older. My father was 21 when it started and he had been dead 18 years. We think about it as history but my father would never talk about it even when pushed, he lost many friends and some relatives and though some of us have an interest in that period of time it must have been a terrible time to live through. Can you imagine going to bed and not even knowing if you were going to get bombed.

Bit like Northern Ireland only a few years ago.
My dad was a German Jew, I never asked him about the war in case it was too painful, now he is gone I have no-one to ask.

At the East Kirkby meet, the Lancaster was on display, a fantastic sight for all present.

What brought it home to me was the size of the aircraft.. then you stand and think that hundreds of these planes left RAF bases never to return, not one Lancaster... Hundreds! Each and every crew member giving their lives so that we can be here today chatting about our cars and suchlike.

I don't mind saying that a tear rolled down my cheek while looking at the plaques in the remembrance garden at East Kirkby.

That coupled with the noise of the Lancs engines made my day.

Last man standing no longer .
 

Another sad loss as Geoffrey Wellum passed yesterday at 96 .
Maybe that a German pilot has survived as 17 year NCO old's would only be
95 today .
