Not been a good few weeks...
Feel a tad deflated in recent weeks, as and when I have had a spare 5 minutes and when the weather allows I have been out trying to do things with 'OTT' but it seems to me I may have bitten off more than I can chew.
As someone that posted on social media the 'restoration' of the underside of the vehicle I felt that when I went to view the car I had no cause to look underneath...that was a big mistake on my part! Following my other thread on the mystery noises coming from the car I went to have a look at the engine mounts and to my horror I have discovered this on all four corners... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...25e24ebb_k.jpgDSC_5321 by Luke Kelly, on Flickr Looks like when I service it I am going to have to take off the sills and sort that too :( just hope its not terminal. |
Classic failure point - sill jacking pads - always pays to keep them full of Dinitrol cavity wax. Tom Hobbs of Nottingham is the go to man for sill welding - great quality everyone on here says and a reasonable price.

Does amaze me that it passed the Mot in January... :(

Is that OTT as in blue ZT with white strip over the top?
That passed me today, going the other way. |
It's not the end of the world. Mine was like that underneath what appeared good. It was limited to the area immediately around the jacking point and easily fixed with a bit of welding, grinding and repainting. Now solid again. The plating was done with thicker than original metal, so I don't have jacking pads any more, just use my own pad on a jack, on the reinforced section. (In my opinion, better than original).

Don't worry, it always looks bad but at least you can see the bottom of the internal jacking bracket, so with a bit of luck, it'll only be the outer sill skin that needs replacing ;)
Just make sure you clean off all the surface rust internally once the outer section is cut off, treat with rust converter if required, prime, gloss then eventually spray internally with waxoyl or similar when everything is painted & finished. If you can find a donor car with good sills, cut the sections out of that - makes it much easier to repair and a good, finished job :} |
