The back garden build by a neighbour close to us may not have got through.

For some this will work well for others it will not.
At our previous house if neighbours had voted we probably would have gotten away with building a 2 story extension.

I'm redundant! I have been a member of our Borough and then Unitary Planning Committee for 20 years (Chairman for 8 years), and whilst I can see great advantages in this, it will certainly lessen my role (not grumbling), it will neither get the number of houses that the Government want built, or satisfy those who have suffered previous monstrosities being built nearby.

Open to abuse and it amounts to passing the book.

It certainly will be but I don't personally believe that the small island of the UK will ever have enough housing with a rising population. :shrug:

you would be surprised how much green land we have, when you fly over the country it is quite surprising.

There are people and I am one of them that own land just to prevent building, irrespective of planning rules. I am pretty sure there are others in the village just the same.
I think last year one chap spent 16k planting trees, about 4,000 of them I think on his land and he seems to have quite a lot of it.

Perhaps now is the time to plan for a smaller population?

When we moved into our house, some twenty years ago, we were told that the land opposite was "green belt" and could never be built on. It's full of Persimmons boxes made of ticky tacky now!:shrug:

I don't think there's any such thing as green belt anymore. I remember years ago in Bristol, the ring road was supposed to be the limit of the houses. They'd be built up to, but not beyond the road. Within a couple of years there was a housing estate split across the road, but that was going to be a one off, making use of old factory land. Now a mile down the road there is a massive estate that is build up to the ring road all the way down to the next junction. From the next junction on is a big industrial park...

I think Corby has not far off doubled in size now. The next town down, Kettering, seems to be expanding on all sides. And they're all stupid prices. We looked at a new persimmon home a couple of years ago, but everything was an optional extra, even the garden was just left as mud! Some flats have just been built down the road from us, 2 bedrooms, kitchen/dining room/lounge all in 1 room, £235,000. We only paid £250,000 for our 4 bed house a couple of years ago!

I think that plan is already in action - it's called NHS efficiency drive! ;)
